Man jailed 6 years for stealing ECG cables

A 32- year old electrician, Kofi Augustine, has been jailed six years with hard labour by the Magistrate Court at Dambai, in the Oti Region, for stealing cables belonging to the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

He was arrested at Kwame Akura, in the Krachi East Municipality, when he was spotted by residents stealing earth copper wires.

Augustine had escaped previous arrest when officials of the ECG and the Dambai District Police pursued him for allegedly stealing electrical cables.

The court presided over by Mr Alhassan Dramani found him guilty of causing unlawful damage and stealing property belonging to ECG.

Prosecuting, Superintendent Mohammed Tanko, said Augustine cut electrical cables at ECG transformer at Kwame Akure, near Dambai, but luck eluded him when some residents of the area raised the alarm, leading to his arrest.

The Dambai ECG District Manager, Kwame Sarfo Appiah, expressed worry that theft of copper wires at ECG transformers within the Dambai District was on the rise.

He cautioned that anyone caught engaging in cable theft would be handed over to the police for prosecution.
