Man jailed 150 days for riding unregistered motorcycle

A 26-year-old man, Stephen Kpodzo, has been sentenced to 150 days imprisonment in hard labour by the Tarkwa District Court, for riding an unregistered motorcycle.

Kpodzo, who was also accused of riding without licence and a crash helmet, was convicted on his own plea of guilty.

He would serve the jail term because he was unable to pay a fine of GH¢1,800.00.

The court presided by Madam Magdalene Thompson , had earlier imposed a fine on the convict, but he was unable to pay the fine.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector George Kwabena Osei told the court that on February 11, 2020, at about 1.30 pm, Kpodzo rode an unregistered Haojin motorcycle from Tarkwa Township toward the Tarkwa Police station.

He said when the convict arrived in front of the Tarkwa Police post, a policeman from the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) spotted Kpodzo with two pillion riders, and all three were without crash helmets.

Chief Insp Osei said the police asked Kpodzo to produce his rider’s licence and road worthy certificate, but he could not produce the documents.

The court heard that the convict was arrested and upon interrogation, he admitted the offence. – GNA
