The Accra circuit court has granted GH¢50,000 bail with three sureties to a Nigerian, who attempted to rob a woman of GH¢12,000.
Godfrey Caleb Chukwuebuka Nnwaiu, 28, accused, tried to rob his victim of GH¢12,000 she withdrew from a bank at the African Union Village, in Accra, on October 26, this year.
The court presided over by Mrs Susana Eduful ordered that two of the sureties were direct relatives of accused earning not less than GH¢2,500 a month. And also asked prosecution to file disclosures for case management conference.
Nnwaiu pleaded not guilty and he would make his next appearance in court on December 14.
Mr Jerry Avenorgbo, who represented accused, had prayed the court to admit his client to bail because the matter as presented by the prosecution was not what took place, adding that accused would not interfere with police investigations.
Defense Counsel said “You are not Jesus to see the future and you cannot therefore say that the accused was going to commit further crimes when granted bail, kindly do away with that illusion, this is not part of the law.”
Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Isaac Anquandah who held brief for Inspector Princess Tetteh Boafo said accused was a flight risk and could commit more offences when granted bail.
The prosecution said that the complainant (name withheld) was a private cook at AU Village at Cantonments in Accra, while accused, a trader, resided at Kasoa.
Chief Insp Anquandah said on October 26, this year, the police received intelligence that a suspected robber had been arrested by some bystanders after he attempted to rob the complainant of GH¢12,000 and attempted to bolt with the booty.
Prosecution said the police motorbike patrol team apprehended accused.
Chief Insp Anquandah said investigations revealed that the complainant had arrived in a taxi from Ecobank, Airport branch, and was crossing the road to her workplace at the AU Village after purchasing vegetables.
The court heard that a motorbike with accused as a pillion rider crossed the complainant and demanded that she handed over a polythene bag containing money to him.
Chief Insp Anquandah said the complainant refused the demand and a struggle ensued, which led to the complainant throwing the money into the middle of the road.
The accused jumped off the motorbike and rushed to take the money and attempted to bolt.
Chief Insp Anquandah said luck, however, eluded accused when some witnesses in the case, seized him and handed him over to the police, but the motor rider escaped. – GNA
