Man, 31, granted bail in GH¢380,000 fraud case

A 31-year old Transport Officer, Frank Asirifi, accused of allegedly defrauding a businessman to the tune of GH¢380,000 after failing to honour a promise he made that he could secure auctioned vehicles has been granted bail by an Accra Circuit Court.

He has been charged with defrauding by false pretences but he denied the charge.

When he appeared before the court presided over by Mr Samuel Bright Acquah, he was granted a GH¢ 400,000 bail with two sureties to be satisfied.

One of the sureties was to be a government worker not earning more than GH¢ 1,500. The sureties were also required to have a fixed abode and a permanent place of business.

The next hearing date was fixed for September 27.

Presenting the facts, Inspector KhoddomAlorway said the complainant, Awudu Musah, a businessman who dealt in cars in Accra, while the accused was a Transport Officer at Huawei Company Limited at Cantonments in Accra.

The court heard that, in 2018, the accused who was a friend to the complainant contacted him that he could help him purchase auctioned vehicles from the Huawei Company Limited, where he worked. 

InspAlorway said that the accused managed to convince the complainant to part with the sum of GH¢ 380,000.00 to get the auctioned cars within six months but he failed to honour his promise and went into hiding.

” However, on September 9, this year, complainant spotted the accused at Kwame Nkrumah Circle near Tip Toe Lane and with the help of some friends, he was arrested and handed over to the Police,” he added. 

According to the prosecution, in his caution statement, the accused admitted the offence and pleaded for some time to resolve the matter with the complainant.
