The Mamprugu Traditional Council has demanded an unqualified apology from government and public withdrawal of the statement issued by the Minister of Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, directing the security to apprehend those involved in the installation of the new Bawku Naba.
According to the Council made up of 21 paramount chiefs within the Mamprugu Kingdom, it took strong exceptions to the action, and called on current and successive governments to desist from engaging in similar action in future.
“Notice is also taken of the bizarre events of the night of Sunday, February 19, 2023 to Monday, February 20, 2023. Four military armored cars led by a pick-up truck, entered the North East regional capital of Nalerigu to carry out directives in a purported warrant issued in Bolgatanga for the arrest of the Nayiri and the Bawku Naba.
“It is unbelievable that such a rambo style activity could be initiated against no mean a person than the king of the Mamprugu Kingdom. We take exceptions to this and want this to be the last time that this government ever disrespects our king in this manner.”
At a press conference held on Tuesday, the Paramount Chief of Gbankoni, Naba Lare Haruna Nasinmo II, speaking on behalf of the chiefs said, the Mamprugu Traditional Council, outrightly condemned the action by the military for attempting to arrest the king on the directive of government.
Meanwhile the Bolgatanga High Court had rescinded and quashed its February 18, 2023 arrest warrant for the arrest of Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga, the Chief of the Mamprugu Naa Bohagu and his kingmakers.
The Court presided over by Justice Alexander Graham, gave the ruling after hearing the matter triggered by Lieutenant Colonel Ajibadeck Benjamin Baba (Retired).
Details of the hearing read: “Upon reading the affidavit of Lieutenant Colonel Ajibadeck Benjamin Baba (Retired) for the variation of an order for warrant of arrest.
“And upon hearing Mrs Joyce Debrah (Principal State Attorney), it is hereby ordered that warrant of arrest issued for the arrest of Naa Bohagu Mahami Abdulai Sheriga (Paramount chief of Mamprugu Traditional Area and his king makers, is hereby rescinded under the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court.
