The Ghana Football Association (GFA) President, Mr Kurt Edwin Simon Okraku, has asked women club owners, club executives and footballers to work hard to ensure the success of the Malta Guinness and women’s football relationship.
Launching the Women’s Premier League (WPL) and Malta Guinness partnership on Wednesday, Mr. Okraku urged the stakeholders to make it their responsibility to ensure the success of the partnership.
Malta Guinness, Ghana’s biggest non-alcoholic malt beverage, signed up a GH¢10 million sponsorship deal to become the headline sponsor for the Women’s Premier League (WPL), for three years, starting from the 2022/23 season.
“If Malta Guinness would stay with us beyond the three years period, a lot would depend on how we as GFA, clubs, players and everyone in the women’s game behaves towards them both on and off the field.”
Mr Okraku said the FA has invested and would continue to commit the right levels of investment into the women’s game.
“Currently, two coaches are in Germany for a four-week attachment programme after which the next badge that includes Mercy Efua Tagoe-Quarcoo, Joyce Boatey-Agyei and Anita Wiredu-Minta will follow.”
He expressed the GFA‘s gratitude to Malta Guinness for responding to the call for corporate sponsorship for the women’s game that will give opportunities to the girls and women to realise their dreams.
The Managing Director of Guinness Ghana Breweries,Helene Weesie,said the partnership with the FA falls in line with the brand’s vow to create a ‘can do world’to empower and energize the extraordinary ladies to do exploits in the world of football.
She said in line with this year’s International Women Day theme – ‘breaking the bias,’ Malta Guinness was certain that “our partnership with the GFA to sponsor the WPL will help us to break the bias in the nation’s football space. We want to create a conducive world for these wonderful female players and other young ladies across the country.”
She urged all to support the women in the league, watch matches, share their stories, cheer the girls on and help take the competition to the next level. The Chairperson of the WPL Committee, Madam Hilary Boaten applauded the sponsors for the faith shown in the women’s game and assured them of their fullest support
