Maintain close contact with electoral areas – Assembly members advised

Assembly members have been advised to maintain close contact with their Electoral Areas to understand challenges of communities.

They have also been asked to consult them to prioritise growth and development projects to alleviate poverty and improve livelihoods.

Wilson Agbanyo, the Kadjebi District Chief Executive, gave the admonition when he handed over motorbikes to 52 Assembly members of the Kadjebi District Assembly in the Oti Region to facilitate their work.

“Maintain close contact with your electoral areas, electorates and the assembly to accelerate progress, growth and development of electoral areas so as to improve livelihoods and not use them for commercial purposes.

“You need to consult the electorates on issues to be discussed at the Assembly level and collate their views, opinions and proposals for onward transmission to the assembly as a way of deepening local governance, probity, transparency and accountability in the districts,” Mr Agbanyo noted.

He said the work of the assemblies would be more appreciable “if assembly members, their electorates and unit committees work closely, by providing the assembly with well-structured information that will help in facilitating the socioeconomic development programmes of the assembly”.

Mr Agbanyo stressed on the need for a meaningful local government, which connoted participatory inclusive democracy at the grassroots level towards existed functioning unit committees and active assembly members to ameliorate the plight of the people.

Noah Wadja, a Government Appointee, on behalf of the Assembly members, thanked the president and the Minister of Local Government, Decentralisation and Rural Development for the motorbikes and promised they would handle them with care to deepen democratic governance at the local level.

Matilda Asantewa, another Government Appointee, said the provision of the motorbikes would relieve her from hiring motorbikes for Assembly meetings and other duties to reduce cost and help the assembly to generate more revenue.

Richard Avitsinu, the Assemblymember for Poase-Cement Electoral Area, said the motorbikes would help facilitate his movement within the electoral area to be in close contact and send their views to the assembly for perusal. -GNA
