Maiden Homowo ampe contest slated for Accra, September 24

The Accra Sports Stadium will host the inaugural edition of the Homowo Ampe Competition on September 24, 2022

The potentially enthralling competition will witness 10 teams – and possibly more, from across the country vying for the bragging rights.

It is being organised by the Ampe Association of Ghana (AMAG) in collaboration with Women Sports Association of Ghana (WOSPAG) under the auspices of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC).

Speaking to the Times Sports last week, President of WOSPAG, Mrs Joyce Mahama, said participating teams were expected to have 10 players in each team.

She said registration of teams was currently ongoing thereby urging interested teams to visit the women sports office at the Accra Sports Stadium before September 16.

“The competition is being organised as part of the Homowo celebrations and to allow patrons experience ampe as a sport and not a game,” she said.

Ampe is a traditional female sport played in Ghana and in other African countries.

It is a simple but energy-driven game played by two or more people and requires no equipment but includes clapping, jumping, dancing, singing activities and a particular fashion style, helping bond communities.
