Former President John Mahama has responded to a coup d’état allegation levelled against him by the Bono Regional Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Kwame Baffoe also known as Abronye DC.
He described the allegation by Mr Baffoe as concocted stories which must be ignored since the former president is a firm believer of democracy.
Former President Mahama maintained that he would not subvert the 1992 Constitution and curtail constitutional governance to support a coup d’état in the country.
In a statement issued on behalf of the former president, Joyce Mogtari, Special Aide to former President Mahama reiterated that he is a firm believer in democracy and would not in any way support a coup d’état in Ghana.
It noted that any attempt to link the former president with any group with the intention to stage a coup would be untrue and unacceptable which must be ignored, adding that “I have been instructed by former President Mahama to respond to yet another publication of false and concocted stories by Kwame Baffoe also known as Abronye the Bono Regional chairman of the NPP.
“The former president has not met with any group of people, let alone a terrorist group, to plot to stage a coup d’état in the country and he is well known, both in Ghana and internationally, as a democrat and a strong believer in strengthening democratic dispensation not only in Ghana but across the continent of Africa.
“Any attempt to align or associate him with anti-democratic activities, acts of destabilisation, abuse of human and other rights cannot be true and further clarification, despite reports of police action against the said Abronye, is simply to re-emphasise former President Mahama’s integrity and democratic credentials” the statement said.
An online news portal on February 14, reported that Mr Baffoe alleged that former President Mahama was conniving with al-Qaeda to stage a coup in Ghana which caught the attention of the Accra Regional Police Command who invited him to assist with investigation on February 15 and the police in a subsequent statement detailed preliminary investigation into the claim made by Mr Baffoe was untrue.
He was thus charged with two counts of publication of false news and offensive conduct conducive to the breach of the peace and Abronye was subsequently detained and arraigned before a court on February 16 where he pleaded not guilty and wasgranted bail in the sum of GH¢100, 000 with two sureties.
