Former President and the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC’s) 2020 Presidential Candidate John Mahama, has stated that President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not willing to fight corruption within his government.
He warned that the situation posed a major threat to the socioeconomic fortunes of the nation.
“The failure by President Akufo-Addo to fight corruption in his government will affect his ability to guarantee citizens an appreciable standard of living and this level of leakage will definitely affect the ability of any government to deliver on its mandate,” former President Mahama cautioned.
The former president, who raised the concern when he spoke at the NDC Professionals Forum on September 6, 2021, pointed out that “the nonchalance and total unwillingness to address corruption in the government is a major worry and will continue to affect our socioeconomic fortunes until the trend stops”.
President Akufo-Addo’s biggest critics, the NDC have consistently chastised him for superintending over allegedly massive corruption, notwithstanding that the president has insisted that his fight against corruption is unprecedented.
On the same issue, a recent survey by the Centre for Democratic Development-Ghana (CDD-Ghana) said 62 per cent of 2,400 Ghanaians interviewed did not have confidence in the ability of President Akufo-Addo to protect the country’s financial resources and curb corruption in the next four years.
It said while Ghanaians are split (48% vs. 48%) on the government’s ability to ensure that rule of law is upheld in the next four years, the majority of them were not confident in its ability to protect the country’s financial resources (53%) and curb corruption and official impunity (62%). –citinewsroom.com
