Mahama accuses govt of harassment of NDC functionaries

Former President John Mahama has accused the “desperate” Akufo-Addo-led administration of using the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) of the Ghana Police Service to “constantly harass” the National Democratic Congress’ (NDC) National Chairman, Samuel Ofosu Ampofo, with “very useless, frivolous and vexatious” allegations.

According to him, “hours after the CID invited Ofosu Ampofo for questioning over recent spate of kidnappings and fire outbreaks in the country, NPP’s desperation to hang on to power is making the party and the government abuse the police in hounding opposition members”.

Speaking to party supporters during his tour of Odododiodoo constituency in the Greater Accra Region, the former president indicated that,  “Let us all work hard to make sure we go from corner to corner because I know in my heart the 2020 elections NDC is going to win and come back to power, Mr Mahama, no amount of harassment of our national chairman and other party functionaries will save NPP from defeat.

“It is sign of desperation the chairman of our party is constantly being harassed by police authorities but let them remember they are setting a precedent, remember in everything they do, they are setting a precedent, you cannot take any frivolous and vexatious investigation and be inviting the national chairman of the biggest opposition party every day to CID headquarters on very useless allegations.

“We are advising the NPP, if you deliver on your promises, Ghanaians will look favourably at you, but if you have failed, don’t out of your desperation, decide to harass our party officials, whatever you do, you cannot escape the judgment of the people, on December 7, 2020. Ghanaians will decide no matter what harassment you subject our people to, the judgment will go in favour of NDC,” former President Mahama said.

In a statement the CID has commenced investigations into cases of kidnapping and fire outbreaks in various parts of the country and intelligence gathered indicates some of the kidnappings and fire outbreaks are being orchestrated by various unidentified groups, persons and individuals.

It said some of the persons picked up for interrogation and investigation mentioned Ofosu Ampofo’s name as part of grand scheme designed to cause fear and panic in the country, as a result of the information and intelligence, he has been requested to report to undersigned to assist in investigations and assured the public due processes will be followed in investigation.
