A member of the Elections Management Board, Adwoa Asuama-Abrefa, has called on the citizenry to work towards maintaining the peace, stability and unity prevailing to enhance socio-economic development.
She explained that it was only when there was peace, stability and unity that the country could continue to succeed in her democratic endeavours, especially since the inception of the Fourth Republic.
Miss Asuama-Abrefa was speaking at the Seventh Ghana Day celebration of the Cedar Mountain Chapel of the Assemblies of God Church International in Accra which was on the theme: ‘Ghana’s Peace Without Boundaries,’ aimed at showcasing the rich culture of the nation and also pray for peace, unity, tranquility and stability especially for the elections and the socio-economic growth and development of the nation.
Ms Asuama-Abrefa, also a Corporate Legal Practitioner, noted that “politicians can also contribute to the maintenance of peace, unity, tranquility and stability by desisting from making statements that promoted ethnic sentiments, conflict and created tension in the country.
“I urge Christians to pray for God’s guidance in exercising our franchise and for a successful, peaceful, free, fair, transparent and credible elections and as a child of God it is our duty to pray because if we do not pray and the country is plunged into chaos, everybody will suffer the consequences.
“I can assure the nation the Electoral Commission will not shirk its responsibility of ensuring credible, transparent, free and fair elections so Ghanaians must have confidence and trust in our electoral processes and not be disillusioned,” Miss Asuama-Abrefa stressed.
The Reverend Dr Steve Wengam, Lead Pastor of the Church, appealed to politicians to demonstrate a high level of tolerance to ensure peace, unity, stability and tranquility in the country and cautioned religious leaders to desist from predicting the results of the upcoming elections which could derail the democratic dispensation. -GNA
