Legon Cities, King Faisal record first wins

Accra Great Olympics’s unbeaten run in the ongoing betPawa Ghana Premier League (GPL) was halted at the El-Wak Stadium yesterday when they were defeated 2-0 by Legon Cities.

Goals from midfielders Michel Otou from the spot and a volley from Suleman Mohammed handed the Royals their first win at home and the first defeat for the ‘Dade Boys’ in the season.

It was a revenge over Great Olympics who did a double over them last season.

Olympics started well with a few incursions into the goal area of the host but failed to cause any havoc.

Cities came into the game with some good inter-positional play as skipper Jonah Attuquaye led the onslaught from the right flanks alongside Kofi Kordzi, Alex Aso and Richard Acquah who kept the visitors goal area boiling.

Kordzi came close to scoring the opener in the 21st minute, but goalkeeper Stephen Kwaku saved the situation while Yusif Abdul-Razak also failed to connect a pass from Ibrahim Sulley midway through the half on the otherhand.

Against the run of play, Legon Cities’ Aso put Acquah through on goal and after the latter’s shot was blocked by Emmanuel Antwi, the ball rolled onto the path of Aso, who raced towards the Oly goal, only to be brought down by the skipper of the side, Kasim Razak for a penalty.

Former Olympics midfielder Otou stepped up and sent Kwaku the wrong way for the opener in the 42nd minute, a lead they held on to the break.

In the second half, Coach Yaw Preko of Great Olympics brought on Gideon Offei Ofori and Emmanuel Mensah but their effort failed to work as the host had other ideas.

On the 58th minute, another former player of Olympics, Eric Osei Bonsu had a long throw-in into the box of the visitors which was headed out by skipper Razak but the header fell to Mohammed who volleyed over Kwaku for the second goal.

The Dade Boys tried to crawl back into the game but, the host held them in check.

At the Baba Yara Sports Stadium in Kumasi, King Faisal recorded their first win in the campaign after beating Kotoku Royals 2-1.

Samuel Adom Antwi opened the scoring for the home side before veteran striker, Abednego Tetteh doubled the tally from the spot in the 56th minute.

Kotoku Royals consolation goal was scored by Emmanuel Marfo.

Tamale City also drew 2-2 with Berekum Chelsea at the Aliu Mahama Sports Stadium.
