‘Ku Me Preko Reloaded’ demo in Accra against economic crisis today

Organisers of today’s demonstration in Accra said they are expecting about 100,000 marchers to hit the streets of Accra to protect against current economic crisis in the country.

Dubbed “Ku Me Preko Reloaded,” the demonstrators are also demanding the resignation of President Nana Akufo-Addo and Vice President, Dr Alhaji Mahamudu Bawumia, who they blame for the crisis.

The demonstration is being championed by Private Legal Practitioner, Martin Kpebu in collaboration with pressure groups, Economic Fighters League (EFL) and #FixTheCountry.

Participants will converge on the Obra Spot at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange from 7:00am and march through Adabraka and Ministries and finally converge at the Black Stars Square where a petition asking the President and his Vice to step down would be presented.

At a press conference in Accra yesterday, MrKpebu called on all Ghanaians to join the demonstration to compel the President and his Vice to step down for superintending over the current economic woes.

“I’ve been wondering about the inaction of Ghanaians in allowing the current economic hardship to fester, while allowing the President and his government to continue to stay in office.

How can we allow this to happen to us? This is the time to come out and demand of them to resign for new faces and ideas to lead us out of our woes,” he stated.

He said the exercise would be a reenactment of the historic 1995 ‘Ku Me Preko’ demonstration led by President Akufo-Addo, who was then an opposition figure, against the government led of late Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings.

Mr Kpebu lamented the current economic hardship which had resulted in astronomical rises in the cost of living and commodities such as food and fuel.

He accused the president and his vice for supervising “reckless borrowing” which played a huge role in the hardship being suffered by Ghanaians and wondered why both of them were still in office.

While Ghanaians were reeling and becoming poorer under the government, he said, the president and his vice as well as other appointees were living lavishly.

He explained that the current hardship, which flies in the faces of pledges and promises made to Ghanaians to garner votes, was enough basis for the president, vice president, minister of finance and his deputies to resign.

“The president must take responsibility of the current situation and resign. The president has failed in the fight against corruption as well.

They brought us here and they cannot lead us out of it. It is only honourable that those who are responsible for our woes make way for new ideas,” Mr Kpebu added.

He argued that the 1992 Constitution provides for the resignation from office of the president and his vice to allow for a transitional team to manage the country for a period of three months before general elections were held for a new President.

He said such a situation would enable the country re-negotiate debt repayments with creditors and enhance Ghana’s image as a beacon of democracy.

Nii Ayi Opare, national spokesperson of the Economic Fighters League, said the country’s current situation should be of concern to every Ghanaian and faulted both the Majority and Minority Caucuses of Parliament for being complicit.

For approving numerous loan agreements for the government and working to approve the nomination of the minister of finance for the position while knowing the implications, he called on the Members of Parliament to resign as well.
