Korea to provide $100m for Techiman Water Supply Project

The government of the Republic of Korea is to provide Ghana with $100 million for the Techiman Water Supply Project in the Bono East Region.

This is subject to Cabinet consideration and approval by the Parliament of Ghana, a statement issued by the Korean Embassy in Ghana said.

According to the statement, the government of Ghana would provide a counterpart funding of about $20 million, bringing the total amount to $120 million.

It said the funds would be allocated under the Economic Development Cooperation Fund (EDCF) which is dedicated to providing concessional loans through the Export-Import Bank of Korea (EXIMBANK) for partner countries to build infrastructure to achieve sustainable growth.

The statement said the scope of work includes construction of water treatment plant, distribution reservoir and intermediate pumps, among others.

When completed, the project would increase accessibility to potable water, reduce water borne diseases, improve the health of the beneficiaries and enhance economic activities and tourism in the area.

It said the support formed part of Korea’s development cooperation with Ghana to support the cause of provision of good quality water for the people.

Already, the government of Korea had financed the $55 million Wa Water Supply Project, which was commissioned by President  Nana Akufo-Addo in October 2017.

The statement said that water and sanitation is central to development and Ghana’s “Water for All Agenda”, which seeks to ensure that every Ghanaian has access to potable water.

The statement reiterated the Republic of Korea’s commitment to supporting Ghana through the Korea International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), EXIM Bank and the Korea Embassy in Ghana.

Good sanitation which includes the provision of potable drinking water to the people is a priority of Ghana’s government.

Ghana remains committed to this cause as it was poised to achieve Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) 6 and 3 of the United Nations which relates to attaining clean water and sanitation and good health and well-being respectively.
