KoKMA to submit feasibility report for construction of Odawna Market… first quarter 2023

The Korle Klottey Municipal Assembly (KoKMA) is to submit the feasibility report for the construction of the Odawna Market to the Finance Ministry for approval by first quarter next year.

The project which is a Public Private Partnership (PPP) with funding from the World Bank when approved would serve as a trading centre for the traders at the Odawna Market in the Korle Klottey Municipality.

The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of KoKMA, Mr Samuel Nii Adjei Tawiah, disclosed this during a stakeholder meeting in Accra on Thursday.

The meeting was to engage with the traders to discuss the current level of development of the Circle Pedestrian Shopping Mall which got burnt in November 2020.

Mr Tawiah said the construction of the eight zone two-storey market facility with a capacity of 6,000 shops and office spaces with ancillary facilities would accommodate both the existing and prospective traders within the Korle Klottey Municipality.

“Currently there are more traders on the pavement and streets than inside the market. This project will increase utilisation of the site and drum in more business opportunities, and centralise trading activities within this part of the municipality,” he added.

The MCE indicated that, before the fire outbreak, Odwana market was occupied by approximately 3,165 traders, saying “after the completion of the re-generation, capacity will increase to 6,000 traders under various categories.”

He said the construction of the market would improve health and sanitation condition in the municipality, improve livelihood and enhance revenue generation.

The Head of Works at the Assembly, Mr Isaac Lamptey, said the Assembly had already signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Ministry of Finance and currently at the feasibility stage to be submitted next year.

Mr Lamptey said the project when completed, would house ancillary facilities such as Police station, Fire Station, Clinic, Banks, crèche, Toilet Facilities, Bulk breaking area, Waste Management area, Parking lots (2 commercial and 1 private).

He indicated that about 3,165 people had registered so far for the acquisition of the shops, and hoping to receive more as the year unfolds.

Mr Lamptey called for collaboration among the traders to ensure smooth planning of the project for the betterment of the Municipality.
