KOICA Alumni hold general assembly

The General Assembly and annual gathering of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) Alumni Association of Ghana was held in Accra last Friday.

The association is made up of persons who had studied on scholarships and other training programmes in South Korea.

Also known as Korean Alumni Association of Ghana (KAAG), the association has more than 1,000 members whose aim is to achieve a common course; to contribute to the development of their organisations through shared expertise, knowledge and experiences acquired in South Korea.

Mr Jeong Dongik, Counsellor and Deputy Head of Mission at the Embassy of Korea in Ghana asked the alumni to work to make the KAAG better.

He said the role of members were crucial at this moment, as Ghana was weaning itself from aid and embracing the Ghana Beyond Aid agenda.

Mr Dongik encouraged them to channel their skill, knowledge and experiences towards achieving better socio-economic development of Ghana.

The diplomat noted that the two countries had co-operated over the past 42 years in the interest of their people.

Korea and Ghana, he said, had partnered in health, education, culture, agriculture, sport, politics and economics.

In addition, Mr Dongik stated that Korea had provided $69.47 million to support Ghana through KOICA.

This year, the Deputy Head of Mission said 122 persons had benefitted from different programmes in South Korea, bringing the total number of beneficiaries to more than 1,100 Ghanaians who had studied on scholarships and other training programmes.

Mr Dongik commended members of KAAG for conducting a successful election and drafting a new constitution.

The Country Director of KOICA, Mr Yukyum Kim, said in 2017 and 2018, more than 30 Ghanaian government officials’ participated in the Performance based Public Human Resource Management System training programme which was aimed at linking performances to wages or payment of public officials in Korea.

In the area of capacity development, he said the Capacity Improvement and Advancement for Tomorrow (CIAT) had been contributing to the socio-economic development of partner countries.

Mr Kim stated that KOICA Ghana office was implementing five major programmes in education, public health, agriculture and rural development.

The newly elected president of KAAG, Mr Dominic Adjei Annang, said plans were far advanced to register the association.

He expressed profound gratitude to members for electing him and said he would transform KAAG.
