The Kabaka Foundation, a charitable organisation which is aimed at putting smiles on the faces of the needy and underprivileged, has paid bills worth GH¢17,000 for mothers who are not able to settle their debts at the Eastern Regional Hospital’s maternity ward.
The foundation, headed by Nana Owiredu Wadie I, Nkosuohene of Kwahu-Nkwatia also donated two table-top refrigerators, two microwave ovens, assorted drinks and cartons of water, toiletries, provisions, mother care items and several gifts worth thousands of Ghana cedis to mothers at the pre-natal, post-natal and neo-natal intensive care unit (NICU) at the hospital.
The gesture was said to be part of activities to mark the Nkosuohene’s birthday which fell on September 28, this year during which he also donated items to hawkers, the needy, street children on the streets of Accra.
The Executive Director of the Kabaka Foundation, Henry Larbi explained that the gesture has been done for the past six years as part of activities to mark the birthday of the chief.
He revealed that the foundation was currently constructing a one storey ultra-modern Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at the cost of GH¢1.9 million for the hospital, to house more NICU babies as well as house mothers who previously slept on bare floors to take care of their babies on admission at the NICU for lack of space.
He said the construction of the NICU which was 60 per cent complete would be completed early next year, adding it would solve the challenge experienced at the hospital and would provide a resting place for mothers.
The Executive Director revealed that the foundation had also done some extension works at the hospital and have adopted one of the wards which has been named “Yaa Boatemaa” special ward after the mother of Nana Owiredu Wadie I.
He said the foundation intended to renovate the wards at the maternity block to give it a face lift and create a conducive environment for the mothers and their babies to rest.
He revealed the Kabaka Foundation had paid bills for a child at the children’s ward of the hospital and hopes to do more for the needy and under-privileged at the hospital.
For his part, the Medical Director of the Eastern Regional Hospital, Dr Arko Akoto-Ampaw, noted that the hospital for some years had received such gestures from the foundation and continued to look forward to receiving generously from the founder, especially on his birthdays.
He expressed his gratitude to the foundation for the many works done at the hospital to alleviate the plight of mothers and children and prayed for God’s blessings on the foundation to enable it to get more resources to continually offer such help.
He said the monies donated to pay off the bills for the mothers would be used judiciously to settle debts owed to the hospital, and expressed the hope that the construction of the NICU would be completed soon to eliminate the challenges that some mothers at the NICU faced.
Mothers at the maternity ward expressed their appreciation to the Kabaka Foundation for exhibiting such kind gesture towards them.
