STUDENTS of the KAAF University College on Friday visited the New Times Corporation (NTC) in Accra to gain hands on experience in the operations of the corporation.
Led by the College’s Deputy Registrar, Administration, Ms Etornam Doamekpor, the visit to the publishers of the daily, Ghanaian Times and The Weekly Spectator newspapers was to afford the students the opportunity to establish a link between academic work and field practice to prepare for the job market.
The students were taken to the newsrooms of the Ghanaian Times and The Spectator as well as the production departments where they were briefed on newspaper production
Mr Matthew Ayoo, News Editor of the Ghanaian Times, in his interaction with the students educated them on the organisational structure of the flagship newspaper and the production process.
He said the corporation was established in 1958 by Ghana’s first President, Osaygyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah, as a media publishing house to inform and educate the masses and promote the development of the country.
Mr Ayoo indicated that the NTC was not only established to inform the masses but also for the vision and policies of Dr Nkrumah to be visualised.
Stressing that the paper gave voice to all and sundry, the Ghanaian Times News Editor stated that with the production of news, reporters across the country submitted timely and accurate reports on events for publication.
News items reported daily in the Ghanaian Times were from the courts, police, Parliament and other events happening across and beyond the country, making the Ghanaian Times indeed the most authoritative newspaper in the country.
He used the opportunity to encourage the students not to only rely on the internet as the ultimate referencing source or point but keep to the old ways of reading.
MsDoamekporwho led the students expressed the college’s gratitude to the management and staff of the NTC for their warm reception.
She said the visit had given them more insights on the print news industry and given them, particularly the students a feel of the journalism world which would subsequently do them lots of good in the near future.
The KAAF University College’s Deputy Registrar of Administration also used the opportunity to applaud management and staff of the corporation for its immense contribution in ensuring development in the country through mass communication.
