A Justice of the Supreme Court, Justice Emmanuel Nii Ashie Kotey, has been appointed as the new chairman of the Governing Council of the Presbyterian University College.
Justice Kotey, an old student of the St. Thomas Aquinas Senior High School, graduated from the University of London and the University of Ghana, is expected to bring his vast academic and legal experience to implement the strategic plan of the Presbyterian University.
He succeeds the former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, who served in that capacity for a period of one and half years, before her appointment as chairperson of the Governing Council of the University of Ghana.
At a swearing-in ceremony yesterday in Accra, the Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana (PCG), Reverend Joseph Obiri Yeboah Mante, urged Justice Kotey to use his legal experience to get the university a charter during his tenure.
He said the church, through the governing board of the university, made the right choice in appointing Justice Kotey, because prior to his appointment as Justice of the Supreme Court in 2018, he was an associate professor at the University of Ghana.
Reverend Mante said the Presbyterian University College is among the best tertiary institutions in the country that promotes quality education.
Justice Kotey expressed his appreciation to the church for the confidence reposed in him and assured them for his readiness in continuing with the strategic plan instituted by his predecessors.
He said the Presbyterian University College, had over the years performed in the areas of health and education, and stressed that; he would bring onboard legal and dynamism in the academic structure of the university.
Justice Kotey, born on October 2, 1953, also served as the Dean of the Faculty of Law in the University of Ghana, and further served as acting director of the Ghana School of Law.
He also served as the Chief Executive of the Forestry Commission of Ghana from 2007 to 2009.
Justice Kotey is a visiting scholar in the United States of America, the United Kingdom and the Netherlands.
