JAPTU, RSMSL sign towing service pact

The Joint Association of Port Transport Unions (JAPTU) Ghana, on Thursday signed a Mandatory Truck Towing agreement with the Road Safety Management Services Limited (RSMSL) to provide 24-hour towing services for disabled, accident vehicles.

JAPTU is the umbrella body for all transport unions operating from the ports of Ghana, and also enhances the security and safety of trucks carting cargoes from Ghana’s ports to consumers in Ghana and beyond.

The agreement would focus on ensuring greater safety on the roads and cost efficiency in operations.

Additionally, it would reduce accidents on the roads and avoid traffic congestion of vehicles.

Addressing the media at the event in Accra, the National Co-ordinator for RSMSL, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Rtrd), DCOP Kwesi Ofori, said the initiative which kick-starts in October would be a nationwide project for the next 10 years.

Mr Ofori noted that the RSMSL would provide a National Call Centre (0800772772) at the office which would operate on a 24-hour routine to receive calls from drivers in terms of break downs or accidents before they come with mechanics to work on the vehicles.

He explained that contingency and operational plans were in place to locate accident-prone areas where heavy duties would be deployed to tow vehicles in no time.

He added that his firm would work with the Police Service to carry out all activities to protect the drivers and vehicles.

Mr Ibrahim Musah, General Secretary of JAPTU urged all drivers to subscribe to an annual fee of GH¢500 which would cater for all their towing activities where 50 per cent would be given back as rebate.

He said towing services within Accra would last an hour and services outside Accra would take two hours anytime and day.
