Involve grassroots in NDC victory 2020 campaign–Parliamentary aspirants

Two parliamentary aspirants, have appealed to the leadership of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) to involve grassroots of the party if the campaign for victory in 2020 will be successful.

They intimated that although the NDC lost by a wide margin to the New Patriotic Party (NPP) during the 2016 general polls, the party’s mistake downplayed the role of the grassroots in the lead-up to the elections.

The aspirants Francis-Xavier Sosu and John Dumelo, human rights activist and an actor are gunning for victory for the Madina and Ayawaso West Wuogon constituencies respectively at the NDC primaries on August 24.

Mr Sosu is hoping to wrestle power from the incumbent NPP Member of Parliament (MP), Alhaji Abubakar Boniface in 2020 if he wins the primaries however, he lost to Amadu Sorogo in the NDC primaries in 2015 and if Mr Dumelo is also successful would face incumbent Lydia Alhassan of the NPP in the 2020 general election.

Mr Sosu noted that there was the need for the party to invigorate the base of the party, citing voter apathy as the main cause of the NDC’s loss in 2020 saying, “For example, when it comes to Madina, the voter turnout in Madina was abysmal in 2016, if you look at 2012, voter turnout was above 80 per cent but in 2016, voter turnout was 20 per cent, clearly, people did not turn up to vote.

“The loss of  Madina constituency to NPP may be due to NDC candidate has been there for long time, I believe with new candidate on block, it will be easier to work again with wards and branches to reenergize the base of the party which I represent that,” he assured.

Mr Dumelo indicated that in 2016 the party didn’t involve everybody, grassroots, wards, branches, everything was done without them, forgetting they hold the party together, adding that, “Should I win the mandate of party delegates, I will involve everybody following party structures for victory in 2020.

At least 118 aspirants have picked nomination forms to contest at various constituencies which comprise 20 women and 98 men seeking approval of the electorate in the 34 constituencies of the region to represent the party in the 2020 parliamentary election.

With the exception of Ablekuma North Constituency where Winifred Ashley is running unopposed, the rest of constituencies are expected to be keenly contested. -myjoyonline.com
