The Chief of Abirem and President of Birim North Association of Chiefs, Obrempong Kwesi Amoh Kyeretwie I, has cautioned his fellow traditional authorities against interfering in politics since it undermines attempts to achieve progress, growth and development of communities.
“If traditional authorities want to achieve effective and efficient economic and social change in their communities, they should avoid getting involved in partisan politics because it will sabotage progress, growth and development efforts and deprive their people of essential socioeconomic advancement,” he intimated.
Obrempong Kyeretwie noted that the position of traditional authorities as custodians were expected to stay impartial for them to obtain their rightful portions of the national cake which must be devoid of partisan politics to improve livelihoods of their people and accelerate development.
Speaking at a meeting held by the Birim North Association of Chiefs in New Abirem, he appealed to traditional authorities to abandon the harmful practice of turning their palaces into courts when dealing with specific issues that may result in penalties.
“We were enstooled by our royal families to promote peace, unity, cohesion and protect our people as well as seek their welfare and it will not serve any good for us to indulge in any selfish interest that can jeopardise the wellbeing and impoverish them and stall growth and development,” Obrempong Kyeretwie said.
He reiterated the need for traditional authorities to collaborate with state security heads in their districts to combat crime by organising watchdog groups and advised sub-chiefs to educate and sensitise themselves on the National House of Chief’s code of ethics, which was intended to govern traditional authorities in the country. –myjoyonline.com
