Independent presidential aspirant kicks against partisan local level elections

An Independent Presidential Aspirant, Marricke Kofi Gane, has stated that he would have opted for initiating a referendum to allow the citizenry decide if they want party politics in the election of Metropolitan, Municipal and District level elections (MMDCEs) if he were in the seat of the president.

Even though he has kicked against district level elections being politicised, Mr Gane noted that the final decision lies with the electorate.

Mr Gane’s comment was in reaction to a discussion on the upcoming December 17, 2019 referendum and district level elections, when asked if he would have done something similar to the president’s actions if he were in office.

“Yes, I would have asked the citizenry to vote whether or not they want political parties to be a part of the local level electoral processes because the framers of the 1992 Constitution, after holding widespread consultations, got a sense that nonpartisan local level elections were the best for the country, an opinion corroborated by the Constitutional Review Commission.

“Nonetheless, I will not rob the citizenry of the opportunity to make the decision through a referendum, however, I will not please the National Chairman of the People’s National Convention, Bernard Mornah, who feels once I did not support partisan election of MMDCEs, I should also kick against any referendum on the matter.

“I got a little lost because he thought that I was going to say, no, and I will not trigger the processes, if you trigger the processes, then it means that you are even thinking about tinkering with the current solution and I think my position is that if the processes has not gone wrong, we should leave it as it is,” Mr Gane asserted. -asempanews.com
