I have paid my dues to Akwatia – MP

The Member of Parliament (MP) for Akwatia in the Eastern Region, Mercy Adu Gyamfi, also known as Ama Sey, has said she has brought massive transformation to the constituency.

She said in spite of her low educational background, her lobbying skills have paid off in her first term in office.

“I have been able to connect electricity to 22 communities, lobbied for roads, social amenities and improved infrastructure at Akwatia,” she said in an interview on Wednesday.

To enhance academic work of teachers as well as pupils, the MP who is a hairdresser by profession said she has also donated laptops, desktop computers, swivel chairs and motorbikes to the Denkyembour district education office in the Akwatia Constituency.

The MP explained that her motivation to improve education in the Akwatia constituency was to ensure no child suffers her fate.

“I have been humiliated for not going to school so I am investing heavily in education so that all the children will go to school,” she added.

Ms Gyamfi was grateful to chiefs and people of Akwatia who have assured to support her quest to bring massive development to the area.

Ms Gyamfi also has shared an emotional experience on her first day in the august house.

She said that she was mocked due to her inability to speak fluent English language and that she “wept” when she first got to Parliament.

“I never imagined an illiterate like me will have such an opportunity so I cried when I entered Parliament,” she revealed.

Ms Gyamfi said she has now realised the work in Parliament which goes beyond educational background.

The MP, who hold a Middle School Leaving Certificate gained popularity  when she beat the incumbent National Democratic Congress’ bigwig, Baba Jamal Ahmed in the 2016 general election.

She stressed that, the people of Akwatia chose her because “they believe I represent their best interests in Parliament”.

She added that, her only aim in Parliament has been to champion the cause of her people and bring development to the area.
