Hearts, Kotoko oldies promise fireworks …in today’s Indece Cup clash

Former players of Accra Hearts of Oak and Kumasi Asante Kotoko will entertain fans today in an Independence Day showdown at the Accra Sports Stadium.

It may not be the present generation of players of the two clubs but the names of the players on the ‘menu’ will take nothing away from the usual Hearts-Kotoko atmosphere.

The game forms part of activities to commemorate Ghana’s 62nd Independence anniversary celebration to be marked by a parade in the Northern Region of the country.

It will bring together players of the two sides that featured from the year 2000 to the current generation.

That would surely spark some excitement among the Phobian followers and at the same time send cold shivers down the spine of the Porcupine Warriors’ followers over the team Hearts is likely to parade.

In the year 2000 through to 2004/05, Hearts paraded the fearsome team that attracted the nickname ‘64 battalion’ for the manner they ‘dismantled’ every opposition and won the CAF Champions League, Confederations Cup and CAF Super Cup.

Fortunately for the Phobians, majority of the members of that squad have confirmed their participation in the game in a bid to ignite the typical Hearts-Kotoko frenzied ambiance.

Hearts’ team to be led by the ‘Prince of Goals’ Prince Tagoe would also parade the likes of the ‘Serial killer’ Bernard ‘Dada’ Don Bortey, Charles Asampong ‘Taylor’, Joseph ‘Bobby Short’ Tagoe and defensive stalwarts, Kwabena Boafo, Adja Tetteh and Michael Donkor.

But Kotoko are not worried over the composition of the star-studded Phobian side; having their own generation of formidable performers that faced Hearts squarely in those years, especially in that memorable Confederation Cup final in Accra and Kumasi which the Phobians triumphed.

Just like the ‘Prince of Goals’ Eric Bekoe was one striker that also tormented a lot of defences including that of the Phobians and Donkor and Boafo may know by now they will have a hell of time with him should they start in the first eleven.

Bekoe who currently plies his trade in Kenya will still want to visit his venom on any Phobian side and on any occasion especially as he is assured of a solid defensive cover from Isaac Owusu ‘Ninja’, Joe Hendricks, Michael Ofosu Appiah (CID) and Godfred Yeboah, Osei Boateng and Frank Osei.

It will be Hearts’ formidable attacking forwards against a water-tight defence of Kotoko that will seek to reignite the rivalry that exists between the two sides.

The event will be supported by De Chris, Crystal Palm Hotel, KG Hotel, J.A Biney, K.K Pepprah Roofing, Dr Caesar, Medi Moses, Jehovah is My Friend, JM Addo and End Point Homeopathy.

According to the organisers, tickets to the Popular Stand will be sold for GH¢5.00; GH¢30.00 for VVIP, GH¢20 for VIP and GH¢10.00 for Centre Line.
