Four participants have been shortlisted to contest in the final run of the Schools Sanitation Solution challenge in Accra.
They are Maame Akua Ohenewaa Gyima of Julian Academy, Tema; Hemes Apolara Sylvia of Experimental Girls Junior High School, Kpong Tamale-Savelugu District; and Neriah Tettey and Joshua Desmenu, both from Silicon Valley International School, Accra.
Organised by World Vision Ghana and Kings Hall Media Limited, the challenge christened the “triple S” is to encourage students to write an open letter to the President of the Republic of Ghana and identify a major sanitation problem in their school.
At the end of the final round, the winner of the challenge will be unveiled as a Child Sanitation Ambassador and will be supported to spearhead sanitation development projects.
In an interview with the Ghanaian Times, Mr Yaw Atta Arhin,Wash Technical Coordinator at the World Vision International, Ghana, said the objective for the competition is to influence children to become sanitaton conscious and agents of change.
Other obejectives he added were to challenge children to co-create sustainable solutions to local sanitation challenges, advocate the removal of barriers and access to safe water and improved sanitation in schools.
He said his outfit recognised the potential of children in the search for sustainable solutions to Ghana’s Sanitation challenges.
“In this regard the partners have been engaging school children since 2018 in various competition-based sanitation campaigns to help them exhibit their knowledge and opinions on sanitation,”he noted.
Mr Arhin said out of the 194 entries received through the essay-based contest, ten most brillant entries were selected for the Round Two, where each contestant defended their essay before a 3-member panel of judges.
Out of it four students have been selected for the Final Round(Battle of the Champions in August.)
Maame Akua Ohenewah Gyima, a contestant, expressed her gratitude to the organisers for giving her the opportunity to participate in the contest, giving an assurance of winning the contest.
