GWA holds trials for ECOWAS games

The Ghana Wrestling Association (GWA) on Sun­day held a trial tournament in Tamale to select a team for the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) Games in Niger from March 17-21.

About 100 wrestlers from Savannah and Northern regions participated in the “justify your inclusion” competition which was keenly contested.

Northern region presented two teams, the Northern Region Zon­go and the Northern Association for the competition.

In the end, Northern Region Zongo came first, with Northern Association and Savannah regions coming second and third respec­tively.

Ten wrestlers were also selected from tournament.

There would be another justifier in Accra where 10 wrestlers would be selected to add up to the 10 from the Northern region to com­pete in the final selection process where five wrestlers would be selected for the ECOWAS Games in Niger.

The occasion was also used to inaugurate regional executives of the association.

Speaking after the event, the President of the GWA, Mr Nor­bert Amefu, praised the partici­pants for the strength and dedica­tion shown on the day.

He added that a similar com­petition would be held annually in the Northern region as they looked forward to make the sport very popular within the region and beyond.

He called on stakeholders to work hard to make the sport very popular in the country and ensure they win laurels for the country.
