The Member of Parliament (MP) for Gusheigu Constituency in the Northern Region, Mr Alhassan Sulemana Tampuli, has cut sod for the construction of GH¢ 3.6 million ultra-modern maternity and surgical ward for the community.

The project is an initiative of the MP with funding from the Abban Foundation, a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

The 40-bed capacity facility is expected to be completed in six months.

Mr Tampuli, who is also the deputy Minister of Transport, speaking at a ground breaking ceremony for commencement of work said the project was in fulfillment of a request made by the Medical Superintendent of the Gusheigu Hospital to provide the area with a medical and a maternity ward.

He said the facility, when completed, would not only serve inhabitants of Gusheigu but adjoining communities.

The MP indicated that the construction of the facility formed part of his contribution to improve and expand access to quality health care delivery in the municipality.

Mr Tampuli said delivery of medical care in the constituency was dear to his heart hence the construction of the facility.

The MP explained that he would continue to provide quality health care for the people in the catchment area, adding that “several entities have supported different projects in the municipalities, but this particular one is the most important as it would serve as first point of call for patients in the constituency”.

Mr Tampuli said the facility, when completed, would make it a major referral centre in the area and expressed his commitment to ensure that the people in the constituency got the best health infrastructure facilities.

He also urged the contractor to fast-track the project in order to complete it on schedule

The MP commended the Abban Foundation for their support to give the people of Gusheigu and its surrounding communities a first class project and staff of the Gusheigu Hospital for their dedication to work in the area.

The Medical Superintendent of the Gusheigu Hospital, Dr Bashiru Abdul- Majeed, expressed his gratitude to the MP for responding to their request on time.

He said the construction of the facility was timely and would bring some relief to staff as the wards in the hospital were always crowded.

He assured of effective monitoring to ensure that the project was executed according to the required specification.
