GRIDco donates 2 orthopedic drill machine to Korle Bu

The Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) yesterday donated two orthopedic drill machines worth, GH¢10,500 to the Trauma and Orthopedics Centre of the Korle-Bu Teaching Hospital (KBTH) in Accra.

The device is used for trauma surgery and also for human hand and foot surgery, usually used to drill bones to fix screw devices or screws.

Making the presentation, Mr Kofi OkofoDartey, Director, Strategy and Corporate Services of GRIDCo, said the donation formed part of the company’s social responsibility to give back to society.

“GRIDCo is an organisation that takes corporate social responsibility very seriously if you know the nature of our work, we transmit all over the country and our people criss-cross, so accident is also part of our system, therefore, the need to assist”,  he said.

The Acting Chief Executive Officer of KBTH, Dr Daniel Ankrah receiving the machines, thanked the company for the gesture and promised that items would be put to good use.

The Head of Department of Accident, Emergency and Orthopedics, Dr Fredrick Kwarteng, said the donation came at the right time, adding that, “in fact we need an average of 10 functionaldrills per day, because the department has three functional theatres and each theatre must have at least five drills so that in a day we can fix the legs of about 15 accident victims a day.

“But here is the case as at last week the department was down with only two drills because all the drills have broken down,  accident victims who had their limbs broken and fractured had their operations being cancelled because the department’s drills had all broken down,” he said.

Dr Kwartengsaid a number of patients had their surgeries cancelled due to the absence of the drill machines which had broken down.

He called on other organisations to emulate the gesture and come their aid, adding that everyone is a possible accident victim.
