GREL hands over water projects to two farming communities

Two communities in the Ahanta West Municipality of the Western Region are set to benefit from two water systems constructed by the Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL), producers of raw rubber for latex.

The two communities are Ahanta Adjumako and Mpatase.

Handing over the facilities, the Corporate Affairs Manager of GREL, Mr Perry Acheampong, said it was essential to create and maintain strong relationship with the stakeholders.

He said the construction of the Water Projects was in line with SIFCA (the mother company) and GREL’s commitment to give meaning to the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goal Six on “Clean Water and Sanitation”.

Mr Acheampong said the GH¢ 310, 000.00 spent on the first phase and yet-to-be-complete second phase, which started in 2023, would provide 20,000 litres of water daily to each community.

He explained that the provision of the water systems was to ensure improved livelihood of residents in the over 90 operational communities in parts of the Eastern, Western and Central regions of Ghana to create congenial development for cordial and peaceful coexistence in the communities.

Mr Acheampong, who did the handing over on behalf of the Managing Director, Lionel Barre, said GREL believed in holding unto the sustainable policy of respect for human rights, responsible development of operations, best management practices in line with national and international laws, regulations and conventions.

He appealed to the two communities to put in place effective mechanisms to ensure that the two water projects were properly utilised and maintained.

The chairman of ACLANGO (Association of Chiefs on whose lands GREL Operates), Nana Kwesi Agyeman IX, said it was only joy for GREL to provide potable water to these two communities.

Nana Agyeman IX, who is also the Omanhene of Lower Dixcove, said ACLANGO would not sit unconcerned for GREL to use the land for free, but would work for communities to enjoy some social amenities to be provided by GREL.

He appealed to the communities to possess the two projects and maintain them for the benefits of generations.

The chief of Adjumako, Nana Nkrumah III, appealed to GREL to cede about four hectares of land for the communities to use as farm land.

The Omanhene of Lower Axim and Vice President of ACLANGO, Awulae Attibrukusu II, urged the beneficiary communities to engage responsible people to be in charge of the projects in terms of repairs.
