The Ghana Rubber Estates Limited (GREL) has handed over a health centre it constructed to the Nsein Community, in the Nzema East Municipality of the Western Region.
The GH¢750,000 facility, constructed as part of the company’s corporate social responsibility, has an Out Patients Department (OPD), two consulting rooms, maternity and delivery wards.
The Managing Director (MD) of GREL, Mr Lionel Barre, in an address read on his behalf, said the new facility would reduce pressure on the Axim Government Hospital.
The GREL MD, who was represented by the Corporate Affairs Manager, Perry Acheampong, said students from Nsein Senior High School (SHS), Ayisakro, Ankyeryin, Avrebo, Awukyire, Ndatiem, Ahunyame and in Nsein would now have access to a health centre.
He said notwithstanding the ravages of COVID-19 on GREL, the company had creditably discharged its commitment to operational communities and other stakeholders.
Mr Barre disclosed that GREL had undertaken at least 11 projects in the Nzema East Municipality.
He said the projects included teachers’ bungalow for Axim Girls’ SHS, Nsein community centre, classroom block with office and store, at Avrebo, Dadwen, Annibil and Bamiakor respectively, 10-seater KVIP at Dadwen and Awukyire respectively, and 10-seater Water Closet Washroom for the Ghana Police Service, at Axim.
The Municipal Health Director, Mrs Priscilla Ama Amoah, said a physician assistant, mid-wife, nurses and other support staff would be posted to the facility.
She appealed to the people to attend the health centre because the upgrading or supply of equipment to the facility would depend on the patronage.
The Paramount Chief of the Nsein Traditional Area, Awulae Agyefi Kwame II, expressed gratitude to the GREL, saying he was happy that women in labour would no longer travel over five kilometres to the hospital.
He said “in some cases, some pregnant women lost their lives due to delay in labour as they arrived at health facilities late”.
Awulae Agyefi Kwame donated a desk top computer to the health centre to ensure effective data keeping.
