Greenwood to be charged with attempted rape

Manchester United forward Mason Greenwood will be charged with attempted rape today, according to a statement released by the Crown Prosecution Service.

Earlier this year, the 21-year-old was arrested on suspicion of rape and assault following accusations from a woman, and he was then further arrested on suspicion of sexual assault and threats to kill.

Greenwood has been suspended by Man United since the allegations were made, and he is now to be charged with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm.

“The Crown Prosecution Service has today authorised Greater Manchester Police to charge Mason Greenwood, 21, with attempted rape, engaging in controlling and coercive behaviour, and assault occasioning actual bodily harm,” said the Deputy Chief Crown Prosecutor for CPS North West Janet Potter.

“All three counts relate to the same complainant. Specialist rape prosecutors from CPS North West’s complex casework unit authorised the charges following a review of a file of evidence received from Greater Manchester Police.

“The defendant’s first court appearance will take place on Monday 17 October at Greater Manchester magistrates’ court.

“The Crown Prosecution Service reminds all concerned that criminal proceedings against the defendant are active and that he has a right to a fair trial. It is extremely important that there should be no reporting, commentary or sharing of information online which could in any way prejudice those proceedings.”

Greater Manchester Police added in a statement: “Mason Greenwood, of Bowdon, will appear at Manchester and Salford Magistrates’ Court today. He was arrested in the Trafford area earlier on Saturday. (October 15).”

Greenwood, who last featured against West Ham United on January 22, has scored 35 goals and registered 12 assists in 129 appearances for Man United in all competitions. – SportsMole
