The Greater Accra Youth and Women wing of the National Democratic Congress yesterday elected Mr Armose Blessing Amos and Mrs Felicia Mekpoi Bortey as their new regional youth and women organisers respectively, during the party’s regional conference held at the W.E.B Du Bois Memorial Centre in Accra.
After a keenly contested election, Mr Amos obtained a total of 85 votes, winning the youth organiser position, and his opponent, Mr Solomon Nii Afutu, secured 24 votes. Mrs Bortey garnered 46 votes.
Mrs Bortey contested the position of the women’s organiser with two other aspirants, namely Mrs Happy Ogboo and Mrs Lucy Rio Sebbie, who secured 26 and 9 votes respectively.
For the deputy youth organiser position, which was contested by seven different aspirants, Alhaji Mohammed Juda emerged the winner with 49 votes while Mr Gideon Hammond secured 25 votes, occupying the second deputy youth organiser’s position.
Similarly, Mrs Evelyn Dodzi Dzeketey obtained 38 votes to secure the deputy women’s organiser position, while Mrs Jessica Patience Braimah pulled 24 votes, becoming the second runner-up and declared the second deputy women’s organiser.
The total votes cast for both positions, as well as the deputy positions were 109 and 81 respectively, including one rejected ballot.
Voting by delegates to elect new or retain regional executives started at 11:30 am under strict supervision of personnel from the Ghana Police Service who ensured that it was violence free.
Speaking after his declaration as the newly elected Greater Accra Youth Organiser, Mr Amos thanked all delegates for the trust reposed in him through the votes cast.
He explained that he was ready to deliver on the promises made during his campaign, which was to develop strategies that would enable the party capture political power in the 2024 general elections.
Mr Amos, however, said it was not appropriate to disclose his vision and strategies to the media as it fell under the operational mechanism or arrangement of the party.
On his part, Mrs Bortey noted that she was grateful to all the delegates for entrusting her with the position of the women’s organiser of the NDC, and promised to give off her best in that regard.
She also called on all contestants to bring the ideas they had on board in order to help the NDC capture political power in the 2024 general elections as it was a collective responsibility.
“Women are the most affected during economic hardships as we are currently witnessing in the country, hence I will like to urge all women, especially the contestants who did not win, to bring their ideas on board to help the NDC win the 2024 general elections,” Mrs Bortey said.
