GPRTU to train 3,000 members on drivers emergency response

Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU) of the Trades Union Congress(TUC) is to train   3,000 members nationwide on drivers’ emergency response to manage injuries and accidents.

The training is to equip members on measures to reduce the risk of road crashes.

Alhaji Salifu Masahudu, Industrial Relations Officer of the GPRTU stated this at a sensitisation programme on national towing services in Tamale on Monday.

The GPRTU and the Road Safety Management Services are in partnership to implement the national towing services.

He said the idea of the programme was to create the awareness of members, transport owners and professional drivers on the smooth implementation of the national towing service.

Alhaji Masahudu stated that, the service would be a mandatory for all categories of vehicles in the country as prescribed by the law.

He said all vehicle owners would register their vehicles at their various branches, local and regional secretariats throughout the country.

“Vehicles that break down on the road would be towed to a  safer place to ensure sanity on the road within an hour of an incident,” he stated .

He explained that, per payment of a towing vehicle, taxi cabs would be required to pay GH¢50, mini buses GH¢80, 33-52 seater buses GH¢ 300 , cargo truck(short) GH¢ 300 and articulated- trucks GH¢ 500.

Alhaji Masahudu said all the payments for the registration of the towing services would be annually.

He, however, urged members to abide by the laws governing the operations of the service.

Alhaji Masahudu stated that the union would soon engage an accredited training institution in the country to deliver the required training of the members to reduce or minimise road crashes.

He, therefore, advised drivers and car-owners to register to avoid being embarrassed on the road by the officers of the Ghana Police Service.
