Govt to provide skills training for tailors, dressmakers

President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has announced plans by the government to provide skills training for tailors and dressmakers in the country.

While acknowledging the role of tailors and dressmakers to the development of the country’s economy, he said the government would support the artisans to enhance their capability and skills.

He said tailors and dressmakers had, for generations, contributed to the country’s development and had been among the most prominent artisans in the country.

The President made these remarks in a meeting with the leadership of the Ghana Tailors and Dressmakers Association of Ghana at the Jubilee House in Accra yesterday.

Already, he said the Council for Technical and Vocational Education Training (COTVET) had trained about 8,000 artisans and dressmakers.

He added that the government was positioning Technical and Vocational Educational Training (TVET) education in the country and commended the association for supporting the government’s efforts.

The President expressed the government’s commitment to support the establishment of a school in Winneba in the Central Region to train artisans and masters

“The Minister of Education will have a look at the Winneba Project and see whether it can be accommodated within the public system and, if not, we will see what can be mobilised to bring it into fusion,” he said.

On a request for government’s support for the purchase of a new bus, President Akufo-Addo said the government was not in the position to purchase buses for associations.

However, he promised the group that he would get players in the private sector to support them to purchase the bus.

The purpose of the meeting was to present a number of petitions before the President and invite him to participate in the 40th anniversary of the association on July 24 in Kumasi in the Ashanti Region

President Akufo-Addo accepted the invitation and pledged to join the members to celebrate their anniversary.
