The government has paid about GH¢750million to contractors since the beginning of the year, the Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Attah has said.
In addition, he said the government was working feverishly to pay all contractors on the sites to ensure that work on various projects were not disrupted
“We are paying the contractors according to the level of works executed” he stated.
Mr Amoako-Attah was speaking at a media engagement in Tamale last Thursday.
The minister was on a five-day working visit to the three northern to inspect progress of works on the various roads projects.
He maintained that the ministry had honoured many of the certificates to contractors, stressing “we have been paying a lot of money to contractors in recent times.”
Mr Amoako-Attah said in spite of the payments made, the ministry still owed some contractors, explaining “of course, it does not mean we don’t owe contractors, we still owe some contractors.”
He, however, assured that the ministry was working around the clock to honour its obligations to contractors “in no time.”
Mr Amoako-Attah reiterated the call on the contractors to ensure quality of work, insisting that his outfit would not countenance shoddiness from any contractor.
He stressed that government would at all times insist on value for money on all projects and that contractors had to strictly follow specifications and guidelines by the engineers.
Mr Amoako-Attah explained that the ministry had intensified the supervision and monitoring of the projects and that, engineers were always on the spot to ensure quality of work.
The minister was full of praise for the engineers for their tireless effort at monitory contractors on the sites.
Mr Amoako-Attah also urged all stakeholders, especially assemblies and other government appointees to monitor the contractors at their jurisdictions.
The Northern Regional Minister Mr Salifu Saeed who accompanied the minister indicated his ready to liaise with the engineers to ensure quality work on all projects in the region.
