Govt commences construction of 12 TVET institutions

Government has commenced the construction of 12 Technical and Vocational Education Training (TVET) institutions across the country, Dr Gideon Boako, the Economic Advisor and Spokesperson to Vice President Dr Mahamadu Bawumia, has said.

He explained that the initiative was in fulfillment of the government’s promise to promote technical and vocational education for accelerated development.

Dr Boako announced these at the second graduation ceremony of the Global Institute of Mines and Safety (GIMS), and first graduation of Polaris Academy yesterday, at Afirisipa, in the Ahafo Region.

It was held on the theme: “the future we want, the role of the mining companies and their host communities, our duty today”, with a call on the graduates to focus on self-employment.

Dr Boako said that TVET will be included in the 2022 Schools Selection and Placements.

He indicated that if completed, the 12 TVET institutions would be provided with equipment and trained instructors and administrators, to manage the facilities.

Dr Boako said TVET Service, under the Ministry of Education, was recently launched by the Vice President, to streamline technical and vocational education in the country.

The Economic Advisor said the National TVET Qualification Framework would ensure the pursuant of higher technical and vocational education at the universities, such degrees in Bachelor, Masters and Doctorate in Technology.

He commended GIMS for boosting career and job seeking opportunities for the youth with internationally certified professional training in the use of mining equipment and heavy duty machines.

The Chief Executive Officer of the Global Institute of Mines and Safety, Mr Gabriel Larry, said a total of 157 students of GIMS graduated and 163 pupils of Polaris Academy graduated from crèche to basic one.

Mr Larry noted that the institute had provided professional training in the use of mining equipment, including excavator, dump truck, general drilling, bull dozer, wheel loader, black hole, forklift and mobile crane.

He appealed to Newmont Gold Ghana and other mining companies, mining contractors and petrol chemical industries to absorb graduates of GIMS.

Mr Larry expressed gratitude to Dr Boako, management, students and staff of GIMS, chiefs, Ghana National Fire Service, Ambulance Service and Ghana Police Service for supporting the center.

The Akwamuhene of Duayaw – Nkwanta Traditional Area, Nana Boakye Bonsu, pledged that chiefs would support GIMS to become a center of excellence.
