Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) has donated to the family of three girls, who were burnt to death in a fire outbreak at Tema Community Two, last Thursday.
The deceased are Bridget Hammond, 11, Winnifred Hammond, 10, and Peresa Hammond, 3.
Father of two of the deceased, Mr Kenneth Nii Armah Hammond, said his late daughters, who were students of the John Bosco Catholic School in Tema were at home with their grandmother, Madam Florence Semenya, when the incident happened at about 2pm.
He said the children, who had returned from school went to rest in a wooden structure.
Mr Kenneth Nii Armah Hammond, made the disclosure to the Ghanaian Times on the sidelines of a visit by a delegation from the GNFS, headquarters, to mourn with the family, and presented an undisclosed amount of money to support the family.
The Tema Metropolitan Fire Officer, Divisional Officer Grade II, Percy Annang said the team was led by the Director of Welfare of the GNFS national headquarters, Deputy Chief Fire Officer (DCFO) Mawusie Sarpong, the Tema Regional Fire Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer (ACFO) Angelina Annan, the Deputy Director in Charge of Public Relations, Divisional Officer II Ellis Okoe, the Second in Command for the Tema Regional Fire Office, Divisional Officer Grade II Timothy Osafo Affum.
He said investigation were ongoing to know the exact cause of the fire.
Mother of one-year-old Bridget Hammond, who was a student of the Tema Community Two Number Four School, Ms Melody Dogbey, described the incident as unbearable.
Meanwhile, the Second in Command at the Tema Regional Office of the GNFS, D.O. II Affum, said they received a distress call at about 3pm about a fire outbreak at Tema Community Two.
“When we got there, the whole structure was in flames and it was after extinguishing it and doing an overhaul that three bodies were found in the wooden structure,” he said.
According to him, the family of the deceased did not inform the fire personnel at the scene that children were trapped in fire.
The grandfather of the victims, Mr Stephen Okoe Hammond, who received the donation on behalf of the family, thanked the GNFS, and said the family was waiting for a police report to enable them bury the girls.
He expressed appreciation to the GNFS for their show of concern.
