GMA threatens to down tools over service conditions

Members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) have given government one week ultimatum, to address issues relating to their conditions of services or they will withdraw their service.

“Effective Monday, November 18, all medical doctors /dentists working in the public sector shall withdraw outpatient department (OPD) service,” the GMA stated.

These were contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the 61st Annual General Conference of GMA, in Tamale yesterday.

The communiqué which was signed by Dr Frank Ankobea and Dr Justice Yankson, President and secretary, of the GMA indicated that government was showing lukewarm attitude towards the renewal of the condition of service of doctors.

They revealed that they had been pursuing government to renew the condition of services of its members since the old one expired last year December.

They maintained that government was not being fair to them, adding that, all efforts to get government to renew the condition of services had proved futile.

They lamented that the government had not made any efforts to renew condition of services for doctors and dentists in the public service since the 2015 one expired last year.

This, they said, had worsened their plight and that they had no alternative than to withdraw their services.

They further warned that they would be compelled to withdraw all their service including emergency services if their demands were not met by December.

“From Monday, December 2, all emergency services shall be withdrawn and total services shall be withdrawn if by December 9, government failed to renew our condition of services,” they warned.

Touching of the theme ” the health of prisoners and other vulnerable groups in Ghana: The realities and expectations ” they called for a national conference on the health of prisoners in the country.

They said that prisoners’ fundamental human rights were being violated and abused.

“The fundamental Human rights of every single person in the country includes the right to health without discrimination, however the health problems of prisoners are largely neglected,” the GMA added.

They, therefore, challenged government to take steps to improve living conditions of prisoners in the country.

GMA also called on government to ensure that there was holistic and comprehensive healthcare delivery for prisoners at all levels of locations.
