GHS to establish staff clinics in all regional hospitals

The Ghana Health Service (GHS) is to establish staff clinics in all regional hospitals for its members across the country.

The clinics are to see to the health needs of staff and their dependents.

Dr Patrick Kuma-Aboagye, Director General of GHS, gave the promise during the Second Senior Managers Meeting in Accra on the theme, “Promoting Healthcare Planning for Healthy Lives: Where Healthcare Systems Met Healthy Behaviours”.

The meeting focused on the performance of the sector over the past half year and also sought to enhance efforts to deliver quality health care services by promoting positive health behaviours in line with the Universal Health Care (UHC) Roadmap.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye said effective health planning would not yield the needed dividends if the health workforce that deliver the service was not taken care of.

“I have as a result directed the institutional Care Division to put in plans for the establishment of staff clinics that will see to the health needs of our staff,” he added.

He also disclosed that the GHS Council had revisited the staff Medical Reinsurance Scheme, and had set in motion plans to relocate the GHS Headquarters to Pantang by the first quarter of 2023.

“Additionally, we have embarked on a number of e-health strategies, such as the digitalisation of our health provision processes, leveraging on smart office to make our work environment green, sustainable and conducive, as well as using IT solutions to manage our fleet, personnel records and health information,” he said.

Dr Kuma-Aboagye expressed optimism that the meeting would afford them the opportunity to situate the evolving trends at the centre of their strategies to ensure the availability of essential healthcare services to the people in need.

He urged the regional managers not to relent in their efforts and contributions in improving the provision of health care services and ensuring that quality UHC was not compromised.

The Chief Executive Officer of the National Ambulance Service, Professor Ahmed Nuhu Zakariah, appealed to the GHS to appreciate the role of the National Ambulance Service and called for an emergency fund to help in the transportation of patients during emergencies to prevent unfortunate happenings.

The deputy ranking member of the parliamentary select committee on health, Mr Mark Kurt Nawaane, assured that parliament would continue to advocate an increased resource allocation to help improve the health sector.
