Ghana making progress in SDGs – National Coordinator

A dissemination workshop to discuss the 2022 Voluntary National Review (VNR) report on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)was yesterday held in Koforiduaby the National Development Planning Commission (NDPC).

Attended by heads of institutions from Municipal and District assemblies, Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), disability groups, it was organised on the country’s 2022 VNR on the SDGs to showcase the progress made so far in attaining the SDGs Agenda 2030.

The National Coordinator on the SDGs, Dr Richard Osei Bofah, explained that the country was steadily making some progress on the attainment of the SDGs.

He disclosed that in relation to Goal 2 aimed at ending hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture, the proportion of population experiencing moderate to severe food insecurity base on food insecurity and experience scale, declined from 49.5 percent in 2017 to 47.7 percent in June 2020 and 47.0 in September 2020.

Dr Bofa stated that in relation to Goal 5 aimed at achieving Gender Equality and Empowerment of all Women and Girls, progress made showed that there has been an average improvement in women participation in parliamentary, political and public life as at 2021.

However, he added that except for Ministers and Chief Directors that declined from 2021, all others recorded improvements particularly for deputy ministers which increased 27 percent from 14 in 2020.

He indicated that even though, these has been achieved there was need to do more in other areas to be able to achieve set targets in 2030.

The Eastern Regional Commissioner of the NDPC, Dr Yaw Adu Ampomah, stated that the VNR process which led to the preparation of a progress report on the SDGs formed an important part of the 2030 Agenda to provide the necessary contributions to achieve major SDGs progress, ascertain challenges and slate recommendations for the way forward.

He said the VNR was to help to identify the transformative priorities and strategies to help to achieve the SDGs.

He said the Ghana 2022 VNR Report which was launched in Accra on August 19, 2022 by the President representative, the Chairman of the NDPC, Professor George Gyan and the President role as co-chair of the United Nations General’s SDG Advocate Emeritus Group, placed a responsibility on all stakeholders in the country to do their best in implementing the SDGs.

For his part, the Eastern Regional Minister, Mr Seth Acheampong, stated the workshop presented a good opportunity to share experiences, deliberate on actions and carve out a path to better outcomes to better the country’s development processes at all levels.

That, he believed would help accelerate efforts to advance the course of SDGs implementation in the country.
