Ghana Federation of Labour dragged to court

The National Union of Teamsters and General Workers Union has sued the Ghana Federation of Labour and its General Secretary, Mr. Abraham Koomson, at an Accra high court for overstaying their mandate.

The plaintiff has also accused the Ghana Federation of Labour and its General Secretary, of flouting part 5 regulation 18 of the constitution and internal regulations of the federation.

To this end, the plaintiff is asking the court for an order of injunction restraining the defendants from holding the current executives out as executives of the Ghana Federation of Labour, after August 31, 2018.

The National Union of Teamsters and General Workers Union is further praying the court for order to set up an interim management committee (IMC) to manage the affairs of the Ghana Federation of Labour, and see to the conduct of election within three months, to elect leaders of the first defendant.

According to the plaintiff the current leadership was constitutionally not qualified to conduct the official business of the federation.

The plaintiff asked the court to declare that “ the purported delegates congress held on 25th -27th October, 2018, scheduled for 28th August, 2018, is unconstitutional, illegal  and null and void, and decision taken at that congress invalid”.

National Union of Teamsters and General Workers Union refers to as the plaintiff is an affiliate member of the Ghana Federation of Labour (first defendant), which is a trade union centre made up of several national trade unions.

And under Article 8 of the rules and regulations governing the operations, administration, control, leadership, structure and other activities stipulated in the constitution and internal regulations, 2012 of the Ghana Federation of Labour, all member unions, including the plaintiff, have the responsibility to protect, defend and uphold the constitution, hence the decision of the plaintiff to seek redress at an Accra high court to ensure sanity in the system.
