The Ghana Broadcasting Corporation (GBC) has acquired the Free-to-Air broadcast rights for the upcoming Qatar 2022 FIFA World Cup.
The rights include television, radio and public viewing (exhibition) rights.
This came to light at a press conference addressed by the Acting Director of Television and Marketing, Mr. George Lomotey, yesterday.
According to him, the television broadcast, which will start from November 21, will feature selected live soccer matches from the group stages, knockout rounds, quarter and semi-finals and finals, include all matches of the Ghana Black Stars.
“The matches will be complimented with the World Cup African TV diaries coming live daily from Doha and will focus on the campaign of the five African countries in Qatar – Morocco, Tunisia,Senegal, Cameroon and Ghana.”
Mr. Lomotey disclosed that GBC has also acquired the right to the 2023 African Nations Championship (CHAN) which the Black Galaxies of Ghana have qualified for, and will be added to optimise value for the Qatar 2022 World Cup sponsorship package.
“GBC will make this package available to interested sponsors on exclusive and non-exclusive basis from this month.”
All the content with Qatar 2022 countdown series will be broadcast exclusively on GTV Sports+, GTV and a consortium of major partner free-to-Air TV stations in Ghana, he said.
On radio rights, Mr. Lomotey, who doubles as the Channel Manager for GTV Sports+ said that all the 64 World Cup matches will be live on all 18 GBC regional and district FM stations across the country and called on independent or private radio stations interested in sharing to contact GBC for the necessary arrangement.
“GBC takes the opportunity to confirm that no other media house or private entity owns Qatar 2022 Free-to-Air TV, radio broadcast and public viewing rights in Ghana and therefore warned that it will take legal action against any entity that may violate that rights.”
“We want to state clearly that GBC intends to protect religiously these rights because it is a huge investment its partner consortium stations are making, so we are just asking every interested entity to come and let’s have a good deal and share in the joy together.”
