The Greater Accra Metropolitan Area Sanitation and Water Project (GAMA-SWP), on Friday, handed over 17 institutional toilets to schools in Tema.
It is a component of World Bank funding allocated to the government of Ghana to construct 406 institutional toilets to improve access to environmental sanitation.
This brings the number of completed toilets to 26 out of the 35 institutional toilets meant to be constructed for various schools within Tema metropolis.
GAMA-SWP commenced in 2015 in low income communities in the Greater Accra Region to provide befitting places of convenience to beneficiaries in order to eradicate open defecation.
The subsidised toilets go between GH¢600 and GH¢1,100 depending on specification, design, type, and size.
Commissioning two of the toilets here for Tema Manhean Primary and Junior High School (A&B), Ing George Asiedu, Project Coordinator, GAMA- SWP asked managers of the facility to take good of it.
He reminded parents, opinion leaders, and the Parent Teacher Association (PTA) that the toilets were provided for use by only pupils.
Mr Asiedu said out of the 19,100 targeted household toilets under the project, 2,300 had been constructed in Tema.
The GAMA-SWP project coordinator asked teachers to mould the attitude of pupils on good sanitation practices and appealed to parents to contribute to the upkeep of the toilets.
Municipal Chief Executive of Tema, Felix Mensah Nii Anang-La, noted that poor sanitation was a nightmare and asked the people to support the government’s vision to make Accra the cleanest city in Africa.
Mrs Margaret Nsiah-Asamoah, Metro Director of Education, said the toilets met World Health Organisation (WHO) standard as they come with ancillary facilities such as cubicles, changing room for girls, water closet and overhead water storage.
She said she was hopeful teaching and learning activities would be improved.
