The Medical Superintendent of the Ga West Municipal Assembly Hospital in Accra, Dr Eric Sarpong-Ntiamoah has called for a national strategy to comprehensively address the stigmatisation of coronavirus patients in the country.
He said such initiatives would help protect persons who suffer infection of the virus and prevent them from spreading it.
Dr Sarpong-Ntiamoah made the call when Elecnor SA, Ghana, contractors of bulk substation donated Personal Protective Equipment (EPE) worth GH¢30,000 to the Ga North Municipal and Ga West Municipal Hospitals in Accra.
The items included; 600 pieces of examination gloves, alcohol base sanitisers, 10 Veronica buckets and 4000 face masks.
Dr Sarpong-Ntiamoah appealed to the public against stigmatising people who have been infected and recovered from the disease.
Presenting the items, the Country Director of Elector SA, Ghana, Mr Mateo Perez said the donation forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility.
He said in these times of coronavirus pandemic there was the need to show commitment towards safeguarding the health and safety of not only their staff but also the citizenry.
Mr Perez commended the officials of the health facilities for their dedication in the fight against the pandemic in the country.
The Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) of Ga West Municipal Assembly, Mr Clement Wilkinson received the donation on behalf of the hospital while Ms Gertrude Ankrah, the MCE for Ga North Assembly took the items on behalf Ga North hospital.
Mr Wilkinson on behalf of the beneficiaries thanked the company for the kind gesture and assured that the items would be used for its intended purpose.
