Greater Accra Regional Minister, Henry Quartey, yesterday took his ‘Let’s Make Accra Work’ campaign to the Okaikoi North, La Dadekotopon and Ledzokuku Municipalities to ensure sanity in those areas.
As part of the working visit to the areas, Mr Quartey supervised the demolition of unauthorised structures at the frontage of the Palace Shopping Mall on the Spintex Road and ordered the relocation of an illegal taxi rank there.
He proceeded to inspect a demolition jointly undertaken by the La Dadekotopon and Ledzokuku Assemblies spanning about 500 meters along the Tema motorway three days ago.
Mr Quartey, MP, Ayawaso Central, also inspected the demolished illegal settlements at the Manet junction on the Spintex Road said to be a major cause of traffic both on the motorway and the Spintex Road during rush hours.
In the Okaikoi North Municipality, he inspected an 18-kilometer asphalt overlay road project and visited a slum settlement in the Okaikoi North Municipality.
The slum near the Lapaz New Market enclave, a hide out for drug peddlers and commercial sex workers, is located under a high tension pole posing danger to lives and property.
The road project stretches from the Kum Hotel through Fish Pond, Six to Six to Akweteyman.
At the time of the visit, personnel and machinery were on site to ensure work progressed steadily.
The minister was escorted by the Municipal Chief Executives, Boye Laryea, Okaikoi North, Evelyn Naa AdjeleyTwum-Gyamrah, Ledzokuku and Rev. Kotey Nikoi, La Dadekotopon.
Addressing the media after the operation, Henry Quartey expressed satisfaction at the operations undertaken by the assemblies.
“One of the major traffic on the Spintex stretch is the Manet junction as you can see…look at what is happening here” he said pointing at a myriad of makeshift structures and haphazard stoppages by trotros.
“These developments here are bringing the benefits we thought it would after the construction of the Manet-Lekma road.”
In view of this, he said, notices have been served to the yet-to-be-demolished structures to be removed by the end of this month.
With regards to the Lapaz based slum, the minister said a final notice would be served on them in the coming days after they have disregarded earlier notices.
Mr Quartey reiterated government’s commitment to fix the roads in the capital having declared 2021 a year of roads.
