Former Assembly Member for Nogokpo-Ativuta allegedly commits suicide

The former Assembly Member for Nogokpo-Ativuta, in the Ketu South Municipality of the Volta Region, Mr Christian Kwame Amuzu, has allegedly committed suicide.

Residents of Yelibato, a community near Nogokpo, where the tragedy took place, were in a state of shock, when they found the body of the 60-year-old hanging from a rope in the living room of Amuzu, in the early hours of last Wednesday.

Ms Baby Amuzu, wife of the late Assembly Member, told the Ghana News Agency (GNA) that the deceased did not complain of any problem prior to the suicide.

She said the husband usually drove their children to school every morning, but on the fateful day, he declined to do so, and rather asked her to take the children to school.

Ms Amuzu said she took the children to school only to return to the house to find the husband hanging from a rope in their living room.

Mr Jonas Fotor Agbagba, the current Assembly Member for Nogokpo-Ativuta, lamented the tragedy, indicating that he met with Mr Amuzu just a day before the incident and they had discussions on how to bring progress to the electoral area.

He wondered what could have triggered Mr Amuzu to commit suicide, recounting: “I met with him just yesterday, as you know, the local Assembly elections are just around the corner and so we had some discussions as to how best to position myself for the election and some other matters relating to the progress of the electoral area.”
