Fmr President Mahama advises govt over AG 2023

Former President John Mahama has urged the government to pull out from the hosting of the 2023 African Games following current economic hardships.

Addressing the nation on the state of Ghana’s economy on Thursday, the former President said, “if it’s not too late, let’s pull out of the hosting of the 2023 African Games,” he stated.

This according to Mr Mahama, would go a long way to cut ‘unnecessary expenditure’ and save the country some money that could be directed to other beneficial areas.

“We need to begin to take up measures that would stop us from spending more money and ensure the economy become stable,” he said.

Prior to the former President’s call, many other sports enthusiasts had asked for the suspension of the African Games due to the very serious economic crisis that Ghana was facing.

Aside that, they also believed that facilities would not be ready for the competition with less than a year to go.

Though the Local Organizing Committee(LOC) led by Dr Kweku Ofosu Asare had insisted that Ghana was ready to host the event, it had also become apparent that it would be difficult to host the rest of the country in August next year owing to recent economic challenges.

The 13th African Games is expected to be held on August 4-19 in Ghana with 54 countries and over 5,000 athletes expected to participate.
