The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) last Friday destroyed large quantities of unwholesome cosmetics at Nsumia landfill site, near Nsawam in the Eastern Region.

The products, which contain harmful chemicals such as mercury, steroids or hydroquinone, and poses danger to human health, were seized from Dream Cosmetics, Paradise and JRA Stop, in Accra, by the FDA.

The Head of Communications of the FDA, Mr James Lartey, said the products were seized early this month after test revealed harmful chemicals in them.

He said the continuous use of such products were very dangerous and could cause permanent neurological damage in children, kidney problems, infertility, birth defect and skin cancer among others.

Mr Larteyassured the public that the exercise would be ongoing to ensure that the market was cleared of such products, and to protect the consuming public.

He urged the public to desist from buying such products adding that consumers should ensure products were certified by the FDA or other recognised organizations, to guarantee their safety.

Mr Lartey appealed to the public to provide information about such products for prompt action.
